Crane and boom attachments for rail lifting are a specialist product category where the consequences of incorrect specification are immediate and serious. A rail lifting attachment that is not rated for the rail profile being lifted, not designed for the crane configuration being used, or not certified for use on the specific network is not a procurement inconvenience. It is a safety risk for the crew operating the crane and a network access issue that can halt a possession entirely.
Rail Depot Direct stocks crane and boom attachments from HARRYBILT Engineering, an Australian manufacturer of rail maintenance equipment established in 1985. This guide covers the HARRYBILT rail scissors and drag block attachments available through the platform, what they do, and how to specify the correct product for your application.
Steel rail is a dense, heavy material. A single metre of 86kg/m crane rail weighs 86 kilograms, meaning a 12.5-metre length weighs over a tonne. Lifting and positioning rail lengths requires attachments that grip the rail securely, maintain control of the load during movement, and release cleanly and safely once the rail is in position.

A general-purpose lifting clamp is not engineered for the grip geometry, load profile, or repeated cycle demands of rail handling. This is not a category where a generic substitute is adequate. Rail Depot Direct |
Rail lifting attachments must also be compatible with the specific rail profile being handled. Different rail profiles have different head geometries, web thicknesses, and foot widths. An attachment designed for 86kg/m crane rail will not fit correctly on a 41kg/m track rail, and using an incorrectly sized attachment creates slip risk that compromises both the load and the crew.
Australian rail profiles are specified by their weight in kilograms per metre, which reflects the cross-sectional mass of the steel section. The HARRYBILT attachments available through Rail Depot Direct cover two weight ranges, matching the most common profiles in use across Australian networks.

If you are working across multiple rail profiles on the same project, for example during a section renewal that involves handling both existing worn rail and new heavy-section replacement rail, you may need more than one attachment type on site. Confirm the profile mix before mobilising.
Rail scissors are lifting attachments that grip the rail head using a scissor-action clamping mechanism that tightens under load. As the load is lifted, the mechanical advantage of the scissor geometry increases the clamping force proportionally. This is a critical safety characteristic: the attachment becomes more secure as the load increases, rather than less.
Rail scissors are used for lifting rail lengths during track installation, removal, and relocation; for positioning rail during welding and joint preparation; and for loading and unloading rail from transport vehicles. They are a fundamental attachment for any crane or boom operating in a rail construction or maintenance environment.

Rail drag blocks are attachments designed for pulling or dragging rail longitudinally along the track during installation and stress relief operations. Where rail scissors lift the rail vertically, drag blocks grip the rail head and transfer a horizontal tensile force from the crane or pulling device to the rail, allowing it to be repositioned along the track axis without lifting.
This is particularly relevant during continuous welded rail (CWR) installation, where rail lengths need to be threaded into position along an existing track without the clearances required for vertical lifting at every point. Drag blocks allow the crane to position the rail from a single attachment point while the rail slides along the track surface.

During CWR installation, the ability to thread rail longitudinally without lifting at every point is a significant productivity advantage. That is the job drag blocks are designed for. Rail Depot Direct |

HARRYBILT Engineering has been manufacturing rail maintenance equipment in Ballarat, Victoria, since 1985. Their product range covers hi-rail and rail guidance systems for road-rail vehicles, rail maintenance equipment for excavators and cranes, and specialist attachments for Australian rail conditions. All products are built for Australian field conditions and come with local manufacturer support.
Before ordering any crane or boom attachment for rail work, confirm three things: the rail profile weight per metre of the rail being handled, the rated capacity of the crane or boom being used, and whether the attachment requires any network-specific certification for use on the network where the work will be carried out. Some Australian network operators require that lifting attachments used within the rail corridor be registered or certified under their specific access conditions.
Sourcing crane and boom attachments through Rail Depot Direct
Rail Depot Direct stocks HARRYBILT crane and boom attachments for Australian rail from a verified Australian supplier. The current range covers rail scissors and drag blocks for both the 41kg/m to 68kg/m and 86kg/m rail profile ranges. For requirements outside this range, Rail Depot Direct's request-a-product service can assist with sourcing.
