Rail-Spec Hi-Vis Clothing

Rail workers in Australia wear orange for a reason. Yellow and lime-green are used in signal systems, which means a worker in either colour can blend into the visual landscape a train driver is scanning. Orange is the one colour that does not appear in the signal palette, which is why every major Australian network requires it on the corridor.

But being orange is not enough on its own. Rail-spec clothing must meet AS/NZS 4602.1 Class D/N, which sets the minimum area of fluorescent material and the retroreflective tape requirements for both day and night visibility. On top of that, individual networks specify their own tape configurations. NSW Rail Tape and VIC Rail Tape are not interchangeable. A shirt that is compliant for a Transport for NSW corridor may not meet Metro Trains Melbourne or V/Line requirements. Check the product title against your network's access conditions before ordering.
