Rail trolleys: concrete, excavator, mollycoddle or rail & girder; which do you need?

Rail trolleys are one of the most practical pieces of equipment in a maintenance contractor's fleet. They let you move materials and plant along track without road access, reducing double-handling and keeping your crew productive within the possession window.

Gold Creek Engineers manufactures four distinct rail trolley variants, each designed for a specific transport task. Getting the right one for your job avoids costly mismatches between the trolley's capacity and what you're trying to move. Here's how to specify the right one.

The GCE rail trolley range at a glance

Trolley type

What it transports

Key feature

Best for

Rail Trolley — Concrete

Wet concrete

Removable hopper with discharge

Filling cast-in-situ foundations, bridge pockets, sleeper pads

Rail Trolley — Excavator

Mini excavators and small plant

Disassembles for transport

Moving plant into possessions with restricted vehicle access

Rail Trolley — Mollycoddle

Rail, sleepers, girders

Spring-applied bogies for secure load retention

Distributing materials along the track during renewal works

Rail Trolley — Rail & Girder

Rail lengths and structural girders

Disassembles for transport, handles long loads

Rail replacement, bridge works, structural installation

GCE Rail Trolley - Concrete

Designed for transporting and placing wet concrete along track. The trolley features a removable hopper that allows concrete to be discharged precisely at the pour point, eliminating the need to carry concrete in buckets or rely on road-based concrete pumping where track access is available.

  • Payload: wet concrete

  • Key component: removable hopper with discharge mechanism

  • Typical applications: sleeper pocket repairs, platform coping, bridge deck pours, cast-in-situ foundations

  • Advantage: significantly reduces manual handling and pour time within a possession

GCE Rail Trolley - Excavator

Designed to carry mini excavators and small plant onto track where road-rail vehicles are not available or practical. The trolley disassembles into manageable components for transport to site, then assembles on-track to receive the plant.

  • Payload: mini excavators and small plant

  • Key feature: fully disassembles for site transport

  • Typical applications: vegetation clearance, drainage works, sleeper replacement, minor earthworks

  • Advantage: brings excavator capability into possessions where hi-rail access is not available

GCE Rail Trolley - Mollycoddle

Individual mollycoddle trolleys are used to transport rail lengths, sleepers, and structural girders along track. Unlike a single-unit trolley, mollycoddles are used in pairs or multiples to distribute the load of long items across multiple axle points, preventing overhang and maintaining stability.

  • Payload: rail lengths, sleepers, girders

  • Key feature: spring-applied bogies for secure load retention across the trolley

  • Used in: sets of two or more for long-length materials

  • Typical applications: rail distribution ahead of renewal gangs, sleeper delivery to renewal sites

GCE Rail Trolley - Rail and Girder

Designed specifically for transporting long rail lengths and structural girders. Like the excavator trolley, the rail and girder trolley disassembles for transport to site. It is designed to handle the weight and length of full rail sections without the deflection that would occur with a shorter platform trolley.

  • Payload: rail lengths and structural girders

  • Key feature: disassembles for transport, engineered for long load geometry

  • Typical applications: rail replacement works, bridge girder installation, structural renewal

How to specify the right trolleyZ: Decision guide

If you're unsure which trolley to order, use this as your starting point:

  • Moving wet concrete to a pour point → Rail Trolley — Concrete

  • Getting a mini excavator or small plant into a possession → Rail Trolley — Excavator

  • Distributing rail lengths or sleepers along the track → Rail Trolley — Mollycoddle (order in pairs or multiples)

  • Transporting full rail sections or bridge girders → Rail Trolley — Rail and Girder

All four trolleys are manufactured by Gold Creek Engineers in Australia. For jobs requiring multiple trolley types or bespoke modifications, Gold Creek Engineers can also be contacted directly through the platform for engineering and design enquiries.
