What Is a Rail Clamp and When Do You Need One?

What is a rail clamp?

A rail clamp is a mechanical device designed to grip the rail firmly and hold it in a fixed position. It clamps onto the rail head, web, or foot depending on the design, and prevents the rail from moving laterally, longitudinally, or vertically while work is being carried out on or near it.

The concept is simple. The application matters. Rail is a heavy, long structural member that is under thermal stress in CWR territory, subject to longitudinal forces during stress relief operations, and capable of moving unpredictably during welding as heat is applied and removed. A rail clamp is what controls that movement and keeps the rail in the correct position while the work is done.

Rail clamps are used on every major Australian rail network, on every type of track, and across a wide range of maintenance and construction activities. They are not a specialised tool for unusual situations. They are standard equipment for any crew doing track work that involves the rail itself.

How a rail clamp works:

Most rail clamps use a screw, lever, or hydraulic mechanism to apply clamping force to the rail. The clamping surfaces grip the rail at the point of contact, and the force is sufficient to resist the loads the rail is likely to generate during the specific task being performed.

The critical design consideration for any rail clamp is the combination of grip force and contact geometry. The clamp needs to grip firmly enough to prevent movement under the expected loads, but the contact surfaces must be shaped and positioned so that the clamping force does not damage the rail surface or the rail head geometry. A clamp that deforms or marks the rail head creates a secondary problem that may require grinding or other remediation.

Different clamp designs achieve this balance in different ways, and different designs are suited to different tasks. Understanding the difference between clamp types is important for specifying the right tool for the job.

Types of rail clamps used in Australian rail maintenance

Track alignment clamp

A heavier duty clamp that bears against the rail web or foot and can be adjusted to pull or push the rail into correct lateral alignment

Correcting misalignment in CWR sections, stress relief operations, and track renewal work where rail needs to be repositioned.

Derail and protection clamp

Grips the rail head and foot to secure a derail device or track protection fitting in a fixed position

Possession safety. Secures protection devices including scotch blocks and derails against unauthorised or accidental movement.


In practice, most maintenance crews carry more than one clamp type because different tasks on the same possession may require different grip configurations. A crew doing a welding operation, for example, needs welding clamps for the weld itself and may also need web clamps to hold adjacent rail sections in alignment during the pre-weld preparation.

When do you need a rail clamp on site?

The honest answer is: more often than most crews initially expect. Rail clamps are needed in a range of situations that come up regularly in Australian rail maintenance.

During welding operations

Thermite welding and flash-butt welding both require the two rail ends being joined to be held in precise alignment while the weld is made. A weld that is made with the rail ends out of alignment produces a weld with geometry defects that affect ride quality and accelerate wear on both the rail and rolling stock wheels. Welding clamps hold the alignment through the entire weld cycle, including the cooling period when the metal is contracting and the forces trying to move the rail ends are at their highest.

During stress relief operations

Stress relief in CWR sections involves cutting the rail to release accumulated thermal stress and then re-welding it at the correct neutral temperature. During the process, the rail needs to be held in position while it moves to its stress-free state and before it is re-welded. Alignment clamps and web clamps are used to control the position of the rail throughout the operation.


A rail that moves during stress relief and is then welded in the wrong position is a maintenance problem that gets worse every time the temperature changes. Getting the clamp setup right before the cut is made is not optional.


During track renewal and panel work

When track panels are being laid and connected, the rail ends of adjacent panels need to be aligned and held in position while the connection is made. Foot clamps and web clamps hold the panels in relative position during this process. In manual track renewal where individual rail lengths are being laid rather than panels, clamps are used to hold each rail section in position while fastenings are installed.

During alignment correction

When a section of track has developed lateral misalignment, correcting it requires pulling or pushing the rail into the correct position and holding it there while the fastenings are re-installed or while tamping is carried out. Alignment clamps provide the grip needed to move the rail and hold it in position during the correction.

For possession protection

Derail clamps and protection clamps secure safety devices in place during a possession. A scotch block or derail that is not properly clamped to the rail can be dislodged by a passing vehicle or by the vibration of nearby plant. Clamping the protection device to the rail is part of establishing a compliant, safe possession protection system on most Australian networks.

Specifying the right clamp

The key specification considerations for rail clamps are the rail profile being clamped, the maximum force the clamp needs to resist for the specific task, and the contact geometry of the clamping surfaces relative to the rail section.

Rail clamps must match the rail profile they are being used with. A clamp designed for 47kg/m rail will not grip a 60kg/m rail correctly because the web thickness and foot width are different. Using the wrong clamp for the rail profile creates either inadequate grip or surface damage at the contact points.
